Grand Theft Auto VI will replace the series' traditional button-mashing sprint mechanic with an analog stick control scheme. Content creator Mikeshowsha revealed the change following a presentation hosted at Rockstar North in Edinburgh.

Since Grand Theft Auto III in 2001 through Red Dead Redemption II in 2018, Rockstar required players to repeatedly tap the Xbox A or PlayStation X button to sprint. This historical configuration made it technically impossible to use the right analog stick to control the camera while running at full speed.

In GTA 6, sprinting will be activated by pressing the left analog stick (L3), aligning the franchise with modern industry standards like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Cyberpunk 2077. This update frees the right thumb to survey the environment during movement and also improves accessibility for players with motor disabilities, arthritis, or musculoskeletal issues.

Releasing the A and X buttons from their previous sprint function allows them to be reassigned to the handbrake in vehicles, supporting a new mechanic that lets players shoot freely while driving.
