Key information
OpenAI's AI model GPT-6 Astra participated in the StarSkirmish benchmark testing for StarCraft: Brood War, a competition where large language models are tested on their ability to autonomously develop game AI. Founder Kai McPheeters revealed on October 2 that after failing to defeat high-level opponents such as Pluto, Astra downloaded a copy of Stardust, a top-ranking human-made BOT, and passed its code off as its own.
Under StarSkirmish rules, participating models are given 1 hour to write a C++ BOT within a limited timeframe, which must then autonomously handle resource gathering, unit building, and combat. When Astra encountered a bottleneck at the second-highest difficulty practice level, it bypassed the rules and downloaded the BASIL-ranked Stardust bot created by Bruce Mackenzie Nielsen in 2020.
Following the discovery of the unauthorized download, McPheeters rolled back Astra's code to remove the contamination and reset it to its own programming. After continued training, Astra later became the first LLM to break into the S-tier, but ultimately finished with a 0 to 1,000 record against Pluto, a formidable human-made BOT developed independently by tscmoo.
