Key information
Jagex has officially announced the development of a fourth MMO within the RuneScape franchise, alongside plans for an animated adaptation. Revealed at RuneFest in Birmingham, England, the project is currently referred to by the working title RS4.
The new title is being built using Unreal Engine to modernize the experience while maintaining the series' core identity. Jagex intends to leverage the community-led development approach used for existing titles to bring the world of Gielinor to a new generation of players.
Jagex clarified that RS4 is not intended to replace RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Each game will retain its own dedicated team and continue to receive investment, with the company aiming to expand the overall universe rather than consolidate it.
Set in Gielinor, the game begins in the region of Ashenfall, taking place years after the events of Dragonwilds. As the project is in early development, a release is not expected for at least a few years. Additionally, the animated project is being produced in partnership with Charlie White, known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and Lyrical Media.
