Key information
Developer Jagex has officially announced a fourth MMO in the RuneScape franchise, alongside plans for an animated adaptation. The news was shared during RuneFest in Birmingham, England.
The new project, currently using the working title RS4, is being built with Unreal Engine. Jagex aims to combine the series' established depth and community-led spirit with modern technology. The game is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age, specifically beginning in the Ashenfall region, years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
Jagex emphasized that RS4 is in early development and is not intended to replace existing titles like RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or Dragonwilds. Each of these games will continue to receive investment from dedicated teams, as the developer intends for the new title to exist alongside them to expand the universe.
Additionally, Jagex is partnering with YouTuber Charlie White, known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and production company Lyrical Media to create a new animated adaptation. While the MMO is expected to take at least a few years to release, the company continues to grow the franchise, which has seen over 300 million player accounts created over 25 years.
