Key information
Epic Games has quietly replaced an in-game artwork for the music track "Meow" by Ironmouse, Sleeping Forest & HalaCG after players discovered a Google Gemini AI watermark in the bottom right corner. Added to Fortnite last month, the track art went mostly unnoticed until its wider discovery led to discussions on social media and Reddit last weekend.
The updated alternative version removes the Gemini watermark. The original artwork, which also features the mark on Spotify, was incorporated directly by Epic Games from the track's creators, indicating the AI usage originated with them rather than Epic Games.
The presence of AI-generated content remains contentious among Fortnite fans, who previously pointed to a nine-toed character on an in-game poster as evidence of poor-quality AI work. An official developer video subsequently demonstrated that Epic Games experiments with AI during the conceptual phase for characters and locations, though the company has consistently avoided strictly confirming specific in-game art as AI-generated.
Epic Games' swift replacement of the artwork indicates a desire to avoid displaying obvious AI elements like the Gemini watermark in Fortnite. Separately, Disney stated over the weekend that it has no current plans to act on rumored desires to buy Epic Games.
