Key information

Valve's digital storefront, Steam, reached a historic milestone this past Sunday by recording 43,505,724 concurrent users. This figure represents the highest number of simultaneous participants in the platform's 23-year history, marking the second time this year that the service has surpassed its own previous record after hitting 42 million users in January.

The platform also observed a new peak for active in-game participation, with over 14 million players engaged simultaneously. While the recent Autumn Sale concluded shortly before this surge, the influx of users follows several notable game releases, including the free-to-play MMO Aion 2, which saw a launch peak of 397,905 concurrent players.

Valve's third-person MOBA-shooter hybrid, Deadlock, also experienced a significant increase in activity, reaching 262,145 peak concurrent players following a major update, despite the developer not yet officially announcing the title.

This sustained growth underscores Steam's continued dominance in the PC market. Financial estimates suggest that Valve generated $15bn (~£11.10bn) through the platform by September, with Forza Horizon 6 identified as the highest-earning new release on the service for the year to date.
