Microsoft has officially announced the creation of XP, a new business division dedicated to expanding Xbox franchises through four distinct branches: Xbox Places, Xbox Pictures, Xbox Partnerships, and Xbox Products. According to chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, this initiative aims to align existing capabilities to help franchises reach broader audiences and foster deeper connections with fans.
A primary focus for the new division is cross-media expansion, specifically targeting film and television projects. This move follows the commercial success of previous adaptations, such as A Minecraft Movie, which earned over $550m (£415m) in two weeks, and the Fallout television series, which reached 83 million viewers within its first 13 weeks. Future projects currently in production include films based on Gears of War and Sea of Thieves.
The Xbox Places branch will manage physical locations, including Minecraft theme parks currently under development in the US and UK. These sites represent an investment exceeding £85m from Mojang and Xbox, with an expected opening window between 2026 and 2027.
While the company pursues these new growth avenues, questions remain regarding the impact on staffing. Following recent wide-ranging cuts at Microsoft and Xbox, some observers speculate whether this strategic shift is an attempt to recoup costs amid the contraction of the firm's core game studios and software business.
