Key information
Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, stated in an interview with Radio Times that he pushed as hard as possible to secure a physical disc release for the upcoming game. Amidst an industry moving rapidly toward a digital future, Hamaguchi explained that his personal preference for physical media, stemming from childhood buying habits and a desire to have developers autograph copies, motivated him to advocate for a disc version.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, across PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game will feature a physical disc option, though it will function as a single key-disc containing only the opening, and players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will need to complete a substantial additional download.
Hamaguchi acknowledged that the approach has divided fan opinion, with many social media users declaring a "no disc, no buy" stance. While noting that publishing SKUs are ultimately handled by the publishing team rather than the director, Hamaguchi stated that he leveraged his position in internal and platform negotiations to advocate for the physical release, concluding that he did his absolute best.
