Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance, an upcoming JRPG set to arrive on October 22, 2026. The title will launch across multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It stands out as the franchise's first installment developed fully using an HD-2D visual style, featuring classic characters resembling Cloud and Terra.

Director Hiroto Furuya explained in an interview that the studio modernized traditional turn-based combat to create a playstyle reminiscent of Octopath Traveler. The main goal was reviving the classic two-dimensional gameplay found in the franchise's earliest entries while maintaining a modern feel.

Furuya revealed that the core design concept involved merging the job system from FF5 with the unique character traits from FF6. He noted that undertaking this experimental approach required substantial research and innovation since such a combination had not been executed previously.

According to Furuya, the development team drew heavily on their personal gaming history and familiarity with the franchise's legacy. Square Enix intended for the project to connect with long-time veterans by awakening feelings of nostalgia through these incorporated legacy mechanics.
