Key information
Rumors are circulating regarding a revival of the classic franchise Ape Escape, following previous speculation concerning Killzone and Uncharted.
Journalist Jeff Gerstmann and VGC report that independent developer Evening Star might be developing a fresh title in the series. Formed in late 2018 by the team behind Sonic Mania, the studio launched Penny's Big Breakaway in early 2024. Gerstmann noted on his podcast that the project is not near completion, though he has heard rumors since the beginning of the year.
Although Team Asobi was previously considered a likely candidate, Evening Star is now linked to the project, with the Los Angeles studio yet to issue comments. Fans also tracked a tweet from director and technical lead Hunter Bridges.
The original platformer debuted in 1999 on PlayStation as the first title requiring a dual analog stick controller. Two sequels launched in 2002 and 2005 alongside spin-offs like Ape Academy and a PlayStation Move rail shooter, before the series went quiet in 2010. Meanwhile, three franchise titles remain accessible on the PlayStation Store for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.
