Key information
Steam achieved a record-breaking September 2026, generating 1.7 billion dollars, a 13% increase year-over-year. Despite this financial success, an Alinea Analytics study reveals that approximately 80% of revenue is captured by established franchises, with new intellectual properties launched in 2026 accounting for only 20.5% of the top 500 titles' earnings.
Analyst Rhys Elliott notes that consumers are increasingly cautious about spending on unknown original games. With household purchasing power under pressure, many players avoid the 70 to 80 euro cost of new releases, preferring to invest in familiar ecosystems or free-to-play titles that serve as social hubs.
Free-to-play games represent 25.6% of the top 500 revenue despite being only 16% of the titles. Four major online games, including Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG, and Dota 2, generated nearly 168 million dollars in September alone, highlighting a preference for long-term multiplayer engagement over shorter solo experiences.
Success for new 2026 titles is largely limited to affordable, cooperative experiences. The shooter WARDOGS earned 86.9 million dollars, while the low-priced title How to Fish sold over 10.1 million copies. These results suggest that players remain willing to spend when developers offer accessible, immediate, and human-focused gameplay.
