Key information
As Sonic the Hedgehog approaches its birthday in 2026, the franchise has received numerous celebrations, including fan meetings in Asia, events in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds and Sonic Rumble, a commemorative album, various merchandise, and the indie curiosity Sonic Pico Park. Amid these transversal celebrations, the official Sonic social media account announced an additional initiative: the launch of an official Sonic Discord server.
Opening an official platform for such a diverse fandom carries notable risks, given the presence of groups ranging from children and adolescents to adult artists producing NSFW content. Precedents include the 2024 situation with Sonic Wiki Zone, which had to reiterate a 13-year minimum age requirement and tone down fanarts. Furthermore, moderators face potential toxicity regarding classic Sonic conflicts, generational divisions, uncritical positive toxicity, and canon debates.
To mitigate these risks, strict rules have been implemented with the support of multiple human moderators and an automated bot. The established guidelines explicitly mandate keeping the server family-friendly, treating others with kindness and respect, strictly prohibiting image uploads, and avoiding political or religious topics.
