While previous entries like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth launched on two discs, the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation will be distributed on a single physical disc that requires a download across all platforms. Weeks after the announcement, community backlash continues to circulate on social media, prompting the game's director to address the controversy.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that he pushed for a physical version as much as possible amid strong modern industry pressure favoring digital and disc-less editions. However, because format and publishing decisions fall outside his direct authority, the resulting physical release acts as a key to start the beginning of the game before requiring players to download the remainder.
Hamaguchi acknowledged that he fully understands why some fans disapprove of this direction, emphasizing that he did everything he could during negotiations. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, and will occupy approximately 200 GB.
