Key information
Following its 2024 revival after an 11-year hiatus, the EA Sports College Football series faces potential cancellation. Insider Gaming reports that sources within the publisher fear the franchise could disappear within five years or sooner.
While EA Sports College Football 28 is confirmed, the series struggles with declining interest. Sales performance has dropped significantly since the initial 2024 launch, with enthusiasm waning throughout 2025 and 2026.
Financial pressures are mounting due to high production and licensing costs. EA paid approximately $20 million to over 11,000 players for name and image rights, and total licensing fees could reach $40 million. These expenses, combined with rising advertising costs, are difficult to sustain given the series' lower revenue compared to Madden or FC.
To address these fiscal challenges, the development team may increase monetization in other game modes. Previous efforts to integrate microtransactions into single-player modes in College Football 27 sparked protests from the player base.
