Key information
Imagineer is set to release "Bokuto Tsuri Nikki" on October 8, 2026, for the Switch2 and Switch platforms. Touted as a serious fishing game experience driven by strategy, the title focuses on recreating the immersive feeling of freshwater angling close to real-life experiences.
Unlike casual mini-game fishing features found in various genres, this title dives deep into the core mechanics of fishing itself. According to Toybox representative director Yasuhiro Wada and Tachyon art director Satoshi Matsuura, the team analyzed real-world fishing to capture the inherent fun of trial and error, noting that fishing involves significant preparation, prediction, and deduction based on weather, time, and location.
Addressing limitations and design choices, the developers noted that early prototypes were too difficult because players caught nothing. To counter this, they introduced player-friendly mechanics, such as tracking gauges and a system where tilting the fishing rod in the same direction as the fish reduces tension, while acknowledging that these choices were added for game enjoyment rather than pure realism.
The game deliberately avoids farm-sim or housing elements to maintain a strict focus on fishing. It features over 100 fish species—including both real and fictional creatures—alongside collection elements like fish rubies and an aquarium mode, and requires players to clear about 30 species to reach the ending.
