Key information
Sohei Niikawa, the creator behind classic titles like Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, has stated that he has no interest in using generative AI to write stories. In a statement to Dengeki Online, Niikawa explained that while he views AI strictly as a tool for improving productivity where applicable, mass production is not his goal.
Niikawa drew a firm line against copyright infringement and unlawful practices, ruling them out regardless of any potential efficiency gains. While he noted that AI could be considered for limited tasks such as suggesting character names, titles, or looking up reference information, he categorically rejects letting the technology generate plots or characters, or listing commercially promising story concepts.
He emphasized that crafting every word and character personally is what makes the development process valuable, arguing that younger developers should focus on building the ability to create concepts that emotionally resonate with players. Niikawa's next upcoming game, Demons' Night Fever, is scheduled to be released on October 22.
