Key information

Sohei Niikawa, the creator behind original titles such as Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, has stated that he has no interest in using generative AI to write his stories. In an interview with Dengeki Online, whose comments were conveyed via machine translation, Niikawa clarified that while he views AI as a tool for efficiency, he refuses to let the technology write scripts or build characters in his games.

Niikawa drew a firm line against copyright infringement and other illegal uses, ruling them out completely despite any potential productivity gains. While he is open to using AI for narrow tasks such as gathering reference information or suggesting character names and titles, he explicitly rejected asking an AI to list commercially promising story concepts. Mass production is not his goal, as he believes the manual work of shaping every word and character is what makes the process valuable.

Furthermore, Niikawa argued that younger developers should build the ability to craft concepts that emotionally resonate with players, treating AI-generated options as raw material rather than accepting them outright. Niikawa's next game, Demons' Night Fever, is scheduled for release on October 22.
