Key information
Sohei Niikawa, the creator of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, stated in an interview with Dengeki Online that he has no interest in using generative AI to write stories for his games. While he views AI as a productivity tool and does not consider it a direct threat to game development, he draws a strict line against copyright violations and illegal applications regardless of efficiency gains.
Niikawa noted he might consider using AI for minor tasks like suggesting character names, titles, or gathering reference information. However, he categorically refuses to let technology generate plots or characters, rejecting the idea of using AI to mass-produce commercially promising concepts. He believes that manually shaping every single word and character is what makes the creative process valuable.
Furthermore, Niikawa advises younger developers to focus on building concepts that resonate emotionally with players, treating AI options critically as raw material rather than accepting them blindly. His next game, Demons' Night Fever, is scheduled to release on October 22.
