Key information

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to release on April 8, 2027, as the concluding installment of the FFVII remake trilogy. Director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that he had to fight and use his position to ensure the game receives a physical release, driven by player demand and the growing sentiment of no disc, no purchase.

The physical version will function as a key disc containing only the opening portion of the game, requiring players to download the remaining content online. Hamaguchi explained that forcing the entire game onto a single disc would have restricted the development team's creative space.

Although Hamaguchi's authority lies in content rather than sales strategy, he conducted internal and first-party negotiations to keep the physical edition alive. He acknowledged player disappointment regarding discs that do not contain the full game, noting he did his best amidst industry trends shifting toward digital releases.

Hamaguchi anticipates that the future of physical games will involve boxes containing only download codes. Following Sony's announcement to halt PlayStation game disc production starting in January 2028, Final Fantasy VII Revelation could stand as one of the final major games to include a physical disc.
