Key information

Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive are working to leverage real-life inspiration from Miami and Florida to promote Grand Theft Auto 6, as its console release draws closer. The fictional city and state of Vice City and Leonida serve as the setting for the upcoming title.

In September, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz criticized the franchise, stating that Grand Theft Auto is built around criminal activity such as murder, robbery, drug trafficking, and violence against law enforcement. Her initial stance opposed using public infrastructure and facilities, including public transportation and Miami International Airport, to promote the game.

Despite initial law-and-order opposition, promotional campaigns progressed. The City of Miami Beach approved a discreet campaign managed by the Boucher Brothers hospitality management company, with ads appearing on chairs and umbrellas. Meanwhile, the Kaseya Center arena erected a massive Welcome to Vice City sign visible from the airport.

A representative for the sheriff's department clarified that Cordero-Stutz's concerns were strictly directed at the message conveyed through the use of public assets rather than promotional decisions by private businesses or organizations. Consequently, the sheriff's department reportedly holds no issue with the NBA's Miami Heat participating in a Night in Vice City rebranding campaign.
