Key information
Dawn Myers, founder of Richualist, has introduced Mint, a hardware tool designed to simplify the time-consuming process of washing and styling textured hair. Myers identified a significant gap in the beauty industry, noting that existing tools often focus on straightening hair rather than addressing the specific needs of curly textures.
The Mint device functions by detangling, conditioning, and applying gel in a single stroke using refillable product pods. It incorporates warming technology to heat products before application. According to Myers, this tool reduces styling time from over an hour to between seven and 10 minutes, while potentially decreasing hair shedding and breakage by up to 70%.
Development of the product spanned five years and required Myers to conduct original research on product usage for textured hair. Collaborating with the materials science company Dow provided essential engineering and manufacturing guidance. Myers faced significant challenges securing venture funding for hardware, eventually raising $1.4 million after liquidating personal assets and navigating a stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis.
Following a successful appearance on Shark Tank in 2024, where she secured a deal with Mark Cuban and Emma Grede, Myers launched the product. With Grede's assistance, Mint expanded into Ulta’s online store earlier this year. The company is currently managing high demand and preparing for further growth.
