Key information

In the latest Critical Role Campaign 4, cast member Liam O'Brien introduced a surreal narrative element centered on a theater production called KoTher'ai. As detailed in the October Lore Keeper Ledger on the Beacon streaming service, O'Brien designed this play to feature his character Halandil Fang, a bard managing a theater company at the Hallowed Round.

The play depicts the story of Vokjan Murzat, an orcish warrior who led the Rungjani people against the god Azgra before facing betrayal. O'Brien drew direct inspiration from William Shakespeare, specifically the playwright's method of adapting historical figures for the stage. Much like Shakespeare’s 1599 work Julius Caesar, the KoTher'ai narrative mirrors the betrayal of a leader by a trusted associate, leading to internal conflict among followers.

Within the campaign, the play serves as a rallying cry against the Sundered Houses. Because the performance is rooted in historical events, the villains are unable to openly oppose it, instead resorting to manipulation and censorship. O'Brien aimed to blend ancient Greek theater with Elizabethan traditions, utilizing a chorus, dances, and soliloquies to mirror Shakespeare’s ability to use history to comment on contemporary societal issues.
