Key information
Ludeon Studios, the developer behind the highly acclaimed colony simulator RimWorld, has officially confirmed it is working on a new, unannounced project. Despite RimWorld maintaining a 97% 'Extremely Positive' rating on Steam from over 210,000 user reviews, the team is shifting focus toward a fresh endeavor after 13 years of development on their flagship title.
The announcement was shared within a Steam update regarding the transition of RimWorld from the Unity engine to Ludeon's proprietary Waylith Engine. While the studio noted that further details about the new game will not be available for some time, they confirmed that the project is currently in development using the same engine technology.
The transition to Waylith Engine in update 1.7 introduces significant technical improvements. Ludeon Studios reports that internal testing shows performance gains between 2 and 4 times faster than the previous version. Players can expect faster startup times, quicker map generation, and higher ticks per second, even when managing large colonies with extensive mod lists.
Crucially, the update ensures continuity for the existing player base. Ludeon Studios stated that the 1.7 version remains compatible with the vast majority of existing mods without requiring additional work from creators. Furthermore, current save files are fully functional in the new version, allowing users to continue their progress while awaiting news on the studio's upcoming project.
