Key information
Yoko Taro, the creator of the NieR franchise, recently revealed that he has grown tired of game development and would prefer to retire. During a discussion at The Tenth Mosaic festival held last month at the Institut français du Japon in Tokyo, Taro admitted he currently has no new projects in development.
Taro explained that he achieved his professional goals early in his career with the 2003 PS2 title Drakengard. Having realized his dream of creating the games he wanted, he views his subsequent work as a continuation of his life, primarily motivated by the need for income.
Despite having sufficient savings to retire, the 56-year-old developer continues to work due to a fear of developing dementia. He noted that he uses the challenges of his professional life as a mental exercise to help prevent the condition, stating that he remains active to avoid the cognitive decline he associates with retirement.
Regarding the future of the Japanese gaming industry, Taro expressed little concern for its long-term trajectory. He observed that while modern technology and AI have lowered barriers for younger creators, they have also intensified competition, a trend he hopes will not impact him before he passes away.
