Key information
The Genji franchise, created by Yoshiki Okamoto and his studio Game Republic, began as a celebrated PlayStation 2 title praised for its artistic design and tactical gameplay. However, the series suffered a dramatic decline during its transition to the PlayStation 3, ultimately leading to the studio's closure in 2011.
The original 2005 game earned a 16/20 rating for its dual-character combat system and the innovative Kamui time-distortion mechanic. Its visual presentation, featuring fixed camera angles and artistic landscapes, was highly regarded for its aesthetic quality.
The sequel, Genji: Days of the Blade, faced significant issues starting with a disastrous E3 2006 presentation where marketing claims of historical realism were undermined by footage of a giant enemy crab. Development was rushed for the PS3 launch, resulting in poor camera management in large environments, technical lack of polish, and frustrating gameplay, which caused the review score to drop to 8/20.
Commercial failure followed the critical reception, exacerbated by the 599€ launch price of the PS3. Despite attempts to recover financially through other projects, Game Republic could not overcome its debts and ceased operations in 2011.
