Key information

Street Fighter producer Shuhei Matsumoto recently disclosed that the franchise faced a critical threat of extinction during the era of Street Fighter 5. Alongside director Takayuki Nakayama, Matsumoto concluded that the intellectual property risked fading into obscurity within a decade if the team did not implement significant changes to revitalize player interest.

The team identified that the player base for Street Fighter 5 was aging, with an average age between 35 and 45. Matsumoto noted that relying solely on this demographic was unsustainable for the long-term survival of the series, as the game had become a distant presence for younger audiences who were aware of the brand but were not actively playing.

To reverse this trend, the developers decided to treat the franchise as if the current generation had no prior knowledge of it. This approach involved explaining character backgrounds and gameplay mechanics from scratch. Key additions included the Modern control scheme, the Battle Hub, and real-time commentary features designed to improve accessibility for new players.

This strategic shift proved successful, as Street Fighter 6 has become one of Capcom's most successful titles. By the summer of 2026, the game had sold over 7 million units, achieving widespread popularity across both Steam and console platforms.
