Key information
Capcom has introduced a multi-stage initiative named the REX project, which is designed to evolve the existing RE Engine into an advanced AI-generation game development platform over time.
During the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 held on October 2, programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the core objectives for the next engine generation, as reported by IGN and GameBiz.
Ishida explained that growing game scale creates time-consuming simple processes, larger teams require more user-friendly tools, and AI integration is vital for boosting development efficiency.
The REX system aims to enhance performance, tools, and quality assurance by building directly upon the RE Engine that supports franchises like Street Fighter, rather than starting entirely from scratch.
Furthermore, Capcom will make certain improvements open-source for AI training and unify the engine under a common programming language to increase accessibility for both human developers and artificial intelligence.
While Capcom previously stated it would avoid using AI-generated assets in its games, the company continues exploring artificial intelligence for programming, graphics, and sound to streamline production efficiency.
