Key information

Capcom has shared updates regarding project REX, which represents the future direction of the RE Engine. Revealed during the CAPCOM Open Conference RE:2026 technology seminar held on October 2, programmer Satoshi Ishida explained that REX is not a complete rebuild from scratch, but rather a gradual integration of new technologies into existing features.

The massive overhaul aims to transform the engine into an AI-era framework because asset and code sizes have grown significantly compared to Resident Evil 7. Rather than generating entire games autonomously, AI will assist developers by writing code efficiently, reading and comprehending universal programming languages, and playing games to detect bugs.

Project REX includes various technical features such as RE:Dox for faster data processing, RE:UI for smoother editor tools, RE:Log for revised history tracking, RE:Flows allowing non-programmers to create systems, and RE:Runtime for loading numerous characters quickly. Capcom previously informed investors that it will not use generative AI assets in its video games.

The completion timeline for project REX and the first game to utilize the upgraded engine have not been announced yet, leaving audiences to monitor future developments.
