Key information
Capcom is preparing a major evolution of its proprietary engine, RE Engine, through a new initiative called project REX. Revealed by programmer Satoshi Ishida during the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026, the long-term goal is to transform the engine for the artificial intelligence generation.
The company intends for artificial intelligence to help program and automatically find errors, as well as generate certain programs by understanding engine code. To achieve this, REX unifies system parts under common programming rules that both developers and AI tools can easily interpret.
Capcom emphasized that this technology will not replace human developers in creating games or generating graphics automatically. Instead, the tools aim to accelerate and facilitate development tasks as company productions continue to grow larger.
Project REX also integrates technologies such as RE:Dox for data processing, RE:UI for development tool interfaces, RE:Log for centralized logs, RE:Flows for visual mechanic design, and RE:Runtime for execution performance. Since its 2017 debut with Resident Evil 7, RE Engine has powered over 27 games.
