Capcom announced major plans to transform its RE Engine into an AI generation game engine through a multi-step improvement project titled REX. The initiative was outlined by programmer Satoshi Ishida at the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 tech conference held on October 2.

According to GameBiz, the REX project addresses development challenges caused by massive game scales, large staff sizes, and the necessity of integrating artificial intelligence into workflows. Rather than building a new engine from scratch, Capcom chose to gradually evolve the RE Engine.

The REX system unifies the entire engine under a common programming language to assist both human usability and AI comprehension. Capcom clarified that while AI will optimize productivity in graphics, sound, and programming, the company will not use AI to generate game assets wholesale.

Portions of the REX program are being made open-source to train artificial intelligence. This technological push follows a busy period for Capcom, which also recently produced multiple acclaimed titles and prepared upcoming movie adaptations.
