Key information
Developer Embark Studios is pushing environmental physics further in the free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter The Finals. Since its surprise release at the end of 2023, the title has allowed players to collapse entire buildings with debris calculated on the fly. The Swedish studio, which includes former Electronic Arts developers who worked on the Battlefield series, calculates this technology on the server side to ensure synchronization among participants.
Destruction serves as a core gameplay mechanic in The Finals, enabling players to bypass stairs by destroying building foundations or opening ceilings with explosives to drop objectives. Rather than focusing solely on cosmetics or weapons, the developers are continuing to invest in their physics engine with an upcoming patch named the Dynamism Upgrade.
The upcoming update will bring environmental physics to new heights, making structures react even more realistically and spectacularly to heavy gunfire and explosions. Additionally, the patch introduces a reworked dynamic smoke system that moves naturally through breaches and can be temporarily cleared by blast shockwaves. The Dynamism Upgrade will be available for free to all players starting on October 20th.
