Key information

Stellar Jockeys recently released their follow-up title, Brigador Killers, into early access. Studio lead developers and brother duo Hugh and Jack Monahan spoke about emulating the show, don't tell morality and storytelling style of '90s PC classics.

The developers expressed a lack of interest in explicit morality systems or narratives that dictate that violence is bad. Jack Monahan criticized heavy-handed sequences in games like Spec Ops: The Line, arguing that players should not be forced into specific roles and then scolded for actions prescribed by the game.

Instead, the creators look to systemic interactions found in older titles like the original XCOM and Crusader: No Remorse. In Brigador, the inclusion of civilians and mechanics like gaining $50 for civilian kills mirror influences from classic games like Syndicate, leaving players to experience unprompted consequences through their own behavior rather than through moralizing cutscenes.
