Key information
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have invested in Fusion Esports Group, the parent company of Astralis, through their firm NXTPLAY. Announced on Tuesday 29 September, the deal follows an August report from auditor BDO that highlighted material uncertainty regarding the subsidiary Astralis CS ApS’s ability to continue as a going concern.
The financial details of the investment remain undisclosed, leaving the specific stake size and total funding amount unclear. While the company recorded a DKK 752.76 nominal capital increase in late September, it is not confirmed if this represents the NXTPLAY investment or the full capital raise anticipated in the company's accounts.
Astralis CS ApS previously reported a net loss of DKK 19.1 million and negative equity of DKK 3.9 million for 2025. Management noted that bookkeeping issues and incorrect VAT returns were identified following the Fusion takeover, though the company stated these have since been corrected.
The investment arrives as esports organizations face ongoing pressure to build sustainable business models. While Fusion CEO Jonas Gundersen described the partnership as a milestone, it remains uncertain whether this new capital will fully resolve the liquidity concerns identified in the firm's audited accounts.
