Key information
Xbox has announced the creation of a new division named Xbox XP, which will oversee film, television, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and live experiences. The initiative aims to expand the reach of Xbox franchises beyond traditional gaming. Kayleen Walters, who previously held leadership roles at Mojang and Lucasfilm, has been appointed to head the division.
The division is structured around four core investment areas. Xbox Pictures will focus on linear storytelling, while Xbox Products handles merchandise and licensing. Xbox Partnerships will manage brand collaborations, and Xbox Places will concentrate on live events, broadcasts, and location-based attractions like theme parks.
The announcement arrives during a period of significant organizational change at Xbox, including the layoff of 268 employees and the restructuring of internal studios. Critics have noted the contrast between launching this new division and the ongoing workforce reductions, questioning the impact on the studio culture that produces the foundational games for these franchises.
This is not the company's first attempt at such an expansion; in 2012, it launched Xbox Entertainment Studios to develop interactive content, which was subsequently closed in 2014. The long-term practical impact of the current strategy remains to be seen, as the company balances these new ventures with its core gaming operations.
