Key information

Anbernic has unveiled its upcoming dual-screen handheld, the RG DDS, which stands for Dream Dual Screen. This device is designed to serve as a modern replacement for the Nintendo 3DS, featuring a faster processor and display aspect ratios optimized for that platform, though it notably excludes the glasses-free 3D effect.

The hardware includes a 4.7-inch top screen with a 1,200x720 resolution and a 4-inch bottom display at 960x720. These screens offer triple the resolution of the original 3DS, facilitating easier scaling for emulated titles. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset and includes a 6,000mAh battery, vibration feedback, and an integrated extendable stylus.

The design closely mimics the 3DS aesthetic but incorporates an additional analog thumbstick on the lower right to support 3D games requiring dual sticks. A button located near the top right of the touchscreen, which functioned as a camera controller on the New 3DS, is repurposed here as a shortcut for forthcoming AI features.

While Anbernic has demonstrated the device running 3DS, Xbox, and PS3 games via emulation, full performance specifications remain undisclosed. The company has not yet announced a price for the RG DDS, leaving its competitive positioning against devices like the $579 Ayaneo Pocket DS uncertain.
