Key information
Dutch law enforcement officials detained a twenty-four-year-old resident of Amsterdam regarding an inquiry concerning ShinyHunters. The Federal Bureau of Investigation attributes a data breach to this cybercriminal collective, which previously revealed secret Grand Theft Auto Online financial statistics.
Reuters identified the detained individual as Pepijn van der Stap, an offensive cybersecurity lead at Neo Security. Reuters noted he possesses prior hacking-related convictions and assumed a leadership role within the hacking syndicate starting in the year two thousand and twenty-five.
The collective rejected these assertions, characterizing the Dutch authorities as incompetent. The hacking group has ties to intrusions affecting more than one hundred entities and organizations, such as Rockstar and Ticketmaster.
During April, the perpetrators targeted Rockstar with extortion demands regarding stolen internal materials, which the developer rejected. Consequently, the syndicate leaked records demonstrating that Grand Theft Auto Online brings in over one million dollars daily.
Following the operation, Federal Bureau of Investigation Cyber Division assistant director Brett Leatherman urged remaining participants to surrender, cautioning that relying on assumed digital privacy or associates remains misguided.
