Key information
Uncovered in-development material from The Initiative depicts the cancelled Xbox Perfect Dark reboot, featuring combat and environmental destruction testing alongside a crumbling facility pursuit. MP1ST reportedly published the leaked video, which was apparently sourced from a visual effects artist portfolio.
The approximately two-minute video highlights weapon fire impacts on objects like fruit props and explosive containers, alongside an incomplete area and a fully detailed server or generator room. Later, a foot chase sequence unfolds inside a collapsing factory setting, potentially representing a mission titled Most Wanted where protagonist Joanna Dark chases a target named Carrington.
Bloomberg previously reported that a rescue agreement for the doomed reboot fell through after Rockstar Games parent organization Take-Two attempted to step in with funding and publishing support. Negotiations ultimately collapsed because the involved parties failed to reach an agreement regarding the long-term ownership of the franchise. Following the cancellation, co-developer Crystal Dynamics also experienced layoffs.
Microsoft cancelled the project during mass layoffs in July of last year and subsequently implemented additional staff reductions across multiple studios. Furthermore, id Software had previously explored concepts including a new take on Perfect Dark, a John Wick-inspired project, and multiplayer demon slaying before staff cuts occurred.
