Key information
Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine Productions, recently expressed confusion regarding the current state of the video game industry. In an interview with the BBC, the veteran designer noted that he no longer understands the economics of game development, suggesting that corporate greed may be driving the wave of layoffs affecting the sector.
Schafer observed that the industry's historical cycle of hiring and firing has fundamentally broken. Previously, companies would lay off staff only to rehire them when new projects required development. He finds the current trend inexplicable, particularly because players continue to engage with games and profits are still being generated by the production of these titles.
The designer highlighted that both AAA and independent sectors face significant risks. He described working on major productions as particularly volatile, as developers often face termination immediately following a game's release. Similarly, independent developers frequently struggle with a lack of funding once their projects launch.
Despite these challenges, Double Fine continues its work. The studio recently concluded a Kickstarter campaign for a new independent project and is set to release Thank You Bus Driver on October 14. Schafer advocates for an industry environment where creative professionals can work securely without fearing for their livelihoods.
