Key information
A former employee of Naughty Dog, Matt Radford, stated that the studio exists primarily to sell Sony consoles rather than generate immediate direct profits like other developers. According to statements shared on a podcast, the developer's main role is attracting players to purchase PlayStation hardware.
Radford explained during the Kiwi Talkz interview that this dynamic allows the developer to spend many years crafting singleplayer story games while the broader industry chases live-service models. He noted that Sony ultimately generates its revenue through console sales under this effective business strategy.
Such major exclusive console productions often achieve superior visual quality because their purpose is hardware enhancement and convincing consumers to buy systems for graphics alone. Radford hopes major studios retain the funding and freedom required to build such massive titles.
Comparing Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2 to historical architecture, Radford expressed belief that future audiences will marvel at the immense handmade effort, acting performances, narrative writing, and environmental detail. Furthermore, Troy Baker mentioned that the protagonist of Intergalactic is considered the new Ellie, with potential updates or releases anticipated around 2027.
