Key information

Sony has introduced QSSR, an adapted version of the PS5 Pro's PSSR technology, to the standard PlayStation 5. Currently available in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, this feature aims to address low internal rendering resolutions by providing a sharper, more stable image.

Digital Foundry experts Richard Leadbetter and Oliver McKenzie described the results as very promising. In Marvel's Wolverine, the technology is deemed exceptional, effectively cleaning up hair details, reducing ray-tracing reflection artifacts, and eliminating visual trails behind moving objects.

However, the visual gains come with performance costs. In Wolverine's performance mode, QSSR requires 1.5 to 1.8 milliseconds more processing time than previous upscalers, potentially impacting frame rates. Leadbetter suggests 1440p is the optimal resolution for QSSR, as 4K reconstruction demands significantly higher processing time compared to the PS5 Pro.

Sony engineer Daniel Craig notes that integrating QSSR into existing PSSR-supported titles is a relatively easy, low-risk process. While experts emphasize that QSSR remains inferior to the PS5 Pro's PSSR, they suggest titles like Alan Wake 2 and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora would be ideal candidates for future implementation.
