Key information

Square Enix holds a vast library of role-playing games, yet many titles have faced neglect despite their potential. Polygon highlights five specific games that warrant modern ports, remasters, or full-scale remakes to reach contemporary audiences.

Parasite Eve, a 1997 horror title, utilized a modified Final Fantasy 7 engine to blend action-oriented combat with a narrative set in Manhattan. Xenogears, a 1998 commercial success, remains notable for its ambitious scope, though it suffered from an unfinished second half. Meanwhile, the 2013 vampire-themed Bloodmasque was restricted to touchscreen devices, and Final Fantasy Type-0 explored a unique magical school setting with a calendar system.

Assessments of these titles vary. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, noted that a Xenogears remake would be a significant, difficult undertaking. Conversely, Kazutoyo Maehiro expressed interest in revisiting Bloodmasque, citing the extensive lore he authored for the project. Chrono Trigger, widely considered one of the best RPGs, remains unavailable on modern consoles, fueling fan demand for an HD-2D remake.

While some titles like Type-0 received past remasters, others remain trapped on legacy hardware or mobile platforms. The absence of accessible versions for classics like Chrono Trigger leaves fans hoping for future developer attention.
