Retail data from Ampere Analysis indicates that 35% of global sales for Marvel's Wolverine were physical discs. The title, which launched on September 15, moved 2.16 million units throughout the month of September.
Regional performance varied significantly for the physical format. In Europe, boxed copies accounted for 51% of total sales. Specifically, physical media represented over two thirds of purchases in France, whereas digital sales dominated in the UK with a two-thirds share.
These figures emerge amid Sony's plan to phase out physical disc production for PlayStation by 2028. While former executive Shawn Layden noted that the 20% of players who prefer physical media are often the most dedicated consumers, Sony has maintained that it will not alter its strategy despite community backlash.
The Video Game History Foundation has expressed concerns regarding the shift toward digital-only content, urging trade groups to develop legal solutions for game preservation. Meanwhile, the industry continues to see a decline in physical releases, with no plans for a disc version of GTA 6.
