Key information
A user named Nomad, who claims over 10 years of IT experience, reported that a Keurig K-Supreme SMART coffee machine generated over 1TB of upload traffic in approximately 10 days. The issue was discovered while investigating why his parents' home Wi-Fi connection had become significantly sluggish.
According to UniFi network management logs, the device recorded 1,008.45GB of upload traffic and 9.94GB of download traffic over 10 days and 9 hours. Tom’s Hardware estimated this resulted in an average upload rate of 9Mbps, which was sufficient to overwhelm the home wireless access point.
Nomad speculated that the majority of this traffic remained within the local area network rather than being sent to external servers. He suggested the device might be generating large amounts of invalid data due to software or network function anomalies, though he ultimately decided against using packet analysis tools to confirm the specific content.
The K-Supreme SMART model utilizes 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for features like BrewID, which identifies coffee pods, and integration with voice assistants. While Keurig collects brewing data for personalization, experts noted that such high traffic is unusual for these functions. Nomad resolved the issue by isolating the machine on a separate VLAN and rebooting the device.
