Key information
Steam access has faced escalating restrictions in Vietnam as government regulations targeting foreign games without official licenses continue to tighten. Local internet service provider blocks and workaround limitations have increasingly disrupted the platform.
According to reports from Vietnamnet Global and GameK, partial restrictions began around September 25, 2024, when certain ISPs blocked Steam and prevented downloads like PUBG. By October 2, gamer communities reported widespread login failures, inaccessible store pages, and blocked update downloads.
Overseas communities such as Reddit received reports that traditional workarounds including VPNs and free DNS services from Google or Cloudflare no longer bypassed the block, though some users noted the issues varied by region or Wi-Fi environment. Neither Steam nor the Vietnamese government has issued an official statement regarding the situation.
Vietnam began restricting Steam in May 2024 over compliance issues regarding game licensing. Additional regional policy shifts have affected other tech platforms, including Samsung’s August 27 announcement that it would phase out Galaxy Store services in Vietnam due to mobile game licensing regulations.
