Valve announced on October 14 that it has officially ended production of the Valve Index VR headset. Originally launched in 2019, the device is now considered a legacy product following the release of the new Steam Frame headset this past September.
The hardware utilized an infrared tracking system that maintained a dedicated user base throughout its lifespan. Despite its age, the device remained a popular choice for those preferring its specific tracking technology over newer alternatives.
International customers can currently purchase remaining stock at a 20% discount, with the headset priced at 399.20 dollars. However, the base stations required for tracking appear to be unavailable, meaning the headset cannot function alone. These discounts are not available in Japan, where the official distributor KOMODO lists all Index products as sold out.
While production has concluded after seven years, Valve confirmed that support for the hardware will continue through Steam and SteamVR. It remains unclear if any further stock will be replenished for the Japanese market.
