Producer Masachika Kawata revealed that Resident Evil: Requiem was originally planned as an online game. This information appeared in the Biohazard 30th Special Mook, a 124-page fan book featuring developer interviews and series history.
Director Koshi Nakanishi initially developed the project with an online focus. However, the team abandoned this direction after mid-development research yielded unfavorable results, leading them to prioritize a horror-centric experience instead.
The development team also adjusted character choices to maintain the game's horror atmosphere. While Leon was the first confirmed protagonist, developers feared his combat proficiency would overemphasize action. Consequently, they introduced a new character named Grace to balance the tone.
Kawata noted that keeping Leon's involvement secret until the end helped sustain interest. These online aspirations mirror past pressures at Capcom, where management previously pushed for multiplayer and microtransactions in Resident Evil 7, though those concepts were ultimately discarded in favor of a traditional single-player horror experience.
