Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, a model exclusive to the Japanese market for the upcoming holiday season. Alongside this hardware reveal, the company reiterated its long-standing policy regarding the future of physical media.
The company confirmed that starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be available exclusively as digital downloads via the PlayStation Store and other storefronts. While physical versions of titles launched prior to this date will remain playable, the production of new physical discs will cease.
