Sony has officially unveiled a new Midnight Black digital PlayStation 5 console priced at 55,000 yen, which converts to approximately 350 dollars. This hardware is scheduled for release on November 19, coinciding with the launch of GTA 6.
The console is strictly limited to the Japanese market. Sony specifies that the unit requires a PlayStation account with the system language set to Japanese and the region configured to Japan, effectively restricting its use to local consumers.
This release follows a trend of region-specific hardware, as the company previously launched a similarly priced digital model in Japan during November 2025. However, the current economic climate differs significantly due to ongoing price hikes.
Rising costs associated with AI data centers have already forced Sony to increase prices for the PS5 and PS5 Pro in March 2026. Given these persistent financial pressures and the likelihood of further price adjustments, it is considered improbable that a similarly affordable console will be released globally in the near future.
