Activision has officially announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, arriving October 23, 2026, will abandon support for PS4 and Xbox One. By focusing exclusively on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC, the developer aims to remove long-standing development constraints imposed by 2013-era hardware.
The transition to modern architectures allows Infinity Ward to optimize specifically for SSD storage, eliminating issues like delayed texture loading and visual pop-in. This shift enables advanced features such as ray tracing, 4K resolution, and performance targets of up to 120 frames per second on current consoles.
Despite the focus on high-end hardware, the game will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2. Digital Legends is handling this native port, utilizing modern technologies like Nvidia's AI-driven image reconstruction to compensate for the console's lower raw power compared to the PS5.
This technical evolution impacts the multiplayer experience by ensuring all players load maps simultaneously, preventing asynchronous wait times. However, the move to a premium strategy means the title will be sold at full price and will not be available on subscription services at launch.
