Paradox has announced a brand new grand strategy IP titled Afterworld, moving away from historical settings into a fictional post-apocalyptic world. The game features neo-dystopian themes set in the ruins of the United States, incorporating elements reminiscent of Fallout and Mad Max.

During a demo preview, the experience began with a backstory questionnaire that sets the player's initial items and narrative arc. Players can start their journey through various Origins, such as the Shelterfolk who survived the nuclear apocalypse in deep underground bunkers.

Survival requires sending rangers out to scout procedurally generated, fog-of-war-obscured biomes to find resources and overcome different challenges. Game Director Dan Lind explained at Gamescom that Paradox actively designed Afterworld to be more approachable and fast-paced than traditional grand strategy titles, acknowledging that players no longer have time to spend hours watching machinations play out.
